What Is an ERP Consultant?
An ERP consultant is an expert who analyzes organizations' business processes, selects, implements and customizes ERP solutions that will make these processes more efficient when needed. The consultant evaluates business flows and determines how these flows can be improved with the right ERP solution.
What Are the Responsibilities of an ERP Consultant?
The responsibilities of ERP consultants vary according to the needs of the project and the organization, but in general they perform the following:
- Needs Analysis: Analyzes the client company's current business flows to determine how these processes can be improved with the ERP system.
- ERP Solution Management and Customization: Selects the ERP software solution that fits the organization's needs and customizes that solution according to the organization's requirements.
- Data Migration and Integration: Ensures that existing data is transferred to the ERP system completely and manages the integration of the ERP system with other existing systems.
- Training and Support: Trains organization staff to use the ERP system effectively and provides support for a certain period after implementation.
- Process Improvement and Optimization: Works on continuously improving and optimizing business processes after the system is implemented.
How Do You Become an ERP Consultant?
The steps a person who wants to become an ERP consultant should follow are:
- Education: Graduating from university departments such as engineering, business or industrial engineering is generally the first step to becoming an ERP consultant.
- Mastery of ERP Systems: It is important to have knowledge of popular ERP systems and gain practical experience with them. How much project experience you have is more important than how much knowledge you have.
- Certifications: Obtaining certifications that demonstrate expertise in ERP systems can be useful for career development. Certifications that provide process and business knowledge, not just software, are also very important.
- Experience: Gaining several years of work experience in business process analysis, project management or ERP implementations are the first steps to success in this field.
- Project Management Skills: Project management skills are vital for managing large-scale and complex ERP projects effectively.
What an ERP Consultant Is Not
The ERP consultant is often a misunderstood role. First, an ERP consultant is not a "technical support person." Although they have technical knowledge, their job is not limited to solving technical issues; the consultant is a strategist who integrates and optimizes all of the organization's processes. Also, an ERP consultant is not a "project manager." Project management is a separate area of expertise in ERP projects and is usually carried out by the project manager. The ERP consultant supports the project manager on technical and business process matters; but is not directly responsible for project management. Understanding the difference between these two roles is critical for a successful ERP project.
